Creamy Basil Tomato Soup

Tomato soup with half and half add to create a nice creaminess to it. Plus some basil added for flavor and red pepper flakes added for a touch of spice.

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
2 medium carrots, peeled and diced
3 cloves garlic, chopped
28 ounces crushed tomatoes
3 cups low sodium chicken stock
3 rounded tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 bay leaf
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
black pepper, to taste
