Home-Made Spicy Barbecue Sauce

This barbecue sauce is quite hot, but also spicy. The addition of fresh herbs that are traditionally used in Louisiana style hot sauce gives a twist to your basic barbecue sauce recipe. I don’t use refined sugar or store bought ketchup, which a lot of people will appreciate. It can be used on chicken, lamb, beef or fish.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion
3 cloves garlic
¼ red scotch bonnet pepper
¼ cup tomato puree
1 teaspoon grain mustard
1 ¼ cup (300ml) passata
¼ cup dark agave
1 tablespoon xylitol
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh basil
1 tablespoon fresh oregano
1 tablespoon tamari
½ teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon cumin
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon extra hot chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
