Hungarian Nut Horns

This is a wonderful cookie which has a walnut meringue like filling. It is a bit of a mess to make. You may need to make extra filling if you run out, or you could substitue jam as a filling. It is one of the must make recipes mom and I made each Chanukah. Roll your dough out in sugar, not flour.

4 c flour
1/2 t salt
1 1/4 c butter
1 package dry yeast
1 c sour cream
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
1 c sugar
2 c grated walnuts
1 t vanilla
Mix together flour, salt, butter, and yeast until it forms small peas. Add sour cream and egg yolks. Add enough milk if needed to make a good dough. In another dish, beat egg whites till soft peaks. Add sugar slowly, and fold in walnuts and vanilla. Take dough and cut into 8 pieces. Roll on board with sugar, not flour. Roll to about 9 inch circle. Spread about 3 T filling over entire area. Cut into 8 triangles (think pizza). Roll each piece up like a crescent roll. Place seam side down onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 min, or until golden brown. Cool on cake rack. Makes 64 cookies. Be aware that filling will more than likely run out of cookies.
