Meatballs in a spicy marinara sauce, topped with cheese and toasted in the oven to perfection.

For the meatballs
1 pound ground beef
1 pound Italian sausage (hot or mild)
1 small onion
3-4 cloves garlic
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon rosemary
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 egg, beaten
1-2 teaspoons teaspoons olive oil

For the sauce
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
4 clove garlic
2 (28 oz. cans) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup water

For the sandwiches
6-8 hoagie or sub rolls
Sliced Provolone or mozzarella cheese
